A historical journey.

In 1873, the first tram of the Indian subcontinent was launched from Armenia Ghat to Sealdah. The length of this journey was 3.9 kilometers (2.4 mi). But this service was stopped due to lack of passengers. Then a London-based company called the Calcutta Tramways Company started tram services in Kolkata. Early horse-drawn trams were used. At this time the tram company had 177 trams and 1000 horses. Later steam engines were used to run trams. At this time the tram company had 19 miles of tram lines. In the early 1900s, tram lines of 1435 mm (4 ft 8.5 in) standard gauge were introduced. Electrification of tram services began in 1902; which was Asia's first electric tram service. Shortly after independence the West Bengal government acquired the Calcutta Tramways Company. Currently it is the only tram service in India.

• Belgachhia – 1903 to 2019 = 116 years, now bus depot. (Route 1, 2, 3, 4, 11)
• Tollygunge – 1903 to still running, tram & bus depot. (Route 24/29)
• Ghasbagan – 1908 to 1971 = 63 years, now bus depot. (Route 41, 42)
• Rajabazar – 1910 to 2020 = 110 years, now bus depot. (Route 14)
• Park Circus – 1925 to 2016 = 91 years, now a bus depot. (Route 20, 21, 22)
• Gariahat – 1943 to still running, now tram & bus depot. (Route 25)

কলকাতা ট্রামের ইতিহাস এখন যুগের সমাপ্তি বলার সময়। একটি ঐতিহাসিক যাত্রা ।

১৮৭৩ সালে প্রথম আর্মেনিয়া ঘাট থেকে শিয়ালদহ পর্যন্ত ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের প্রথম ট্রাম চালু হয়। এই যাত্রা পথের দৈর্ঘ্য ছিল ৩.৯ কিলোমিটার (২.৪ মাইল)। কিন্তু যাত্রীর অভাবে এই পরিষেবা বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। এরপর ক্যালকাটা ট্রামওয়েজ কোম্পানি নামে একটি লন্ডন ভিত্তিক কোম্পানি কলকাতায় ট্রাম পরিষেবা শুরু করে। প্রথম দিকে ঘোড়া টানা ট্রাম ব্যবহার করা হত। এই সময় ট্রাম কোম্পানিটির হাতে ১৭৭টি ট্রাম ও ১০০০ টি ঘোড়া ছিল। পরে স্টিম ইঞ্জিন ব্যবহৃত হত ট্রাম চালানোর জন্য। এই সময় ট্রাম কোম্পানির ১৯ মাইল ট্রাম লাইন ছিল। ১৯০০ সালের শুরুতে ১৪৩৫ এমএম (৪ ফুট ৮.৫ ইঞ্চি) স্ট্যান্ডার্ড গেজের ট্রাম লাইন চালু হয়। ১৯০২ সালে ট্রাম পরিষেবার বৈদ্যুতীকরন শুরু হয়; যেটি ছিল এশিয়ার প্রথম বৈদ্যুতিক ট্রাম পরিষেবা। স্বাধীনতার কিছু পরে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার ক্যালকাটা ট্রামওয়েজ কোম্পানিকে অধিগ্রহণ করে। বর্তমানে এটি ভারতের একমাত্র ট্রাম পরিসেবা।
